THE GOI PEACE FOUNDATION - WHAT IS LIVE?
(súťaž esejí organizovaná japonskou nadáciou)The rhetorical question of the meaning of life – something we asked for ever since we could ask at all. Yet, it remains unanswered, after all this time. When I first saw the subject of the essay, I felt a burden on my shoulders. If wise philosophers and sceptics couldn’t figure this out in all of humankind’s existence, how could I? But the point isn’t to answer the question, not directly — as it will never be.
Behind every religion, spirituality or belief, there is a desperate person trying to find the right way, preaching their morality and calling it the truth. The odds are impossible, yet not quite. We’ll never truly know, that’s a part of the reason why anyone should be able to live by any law they view as good. Claiming to know that your beliefs are the only way is charlatanic and should be rightfully criticized. Be it theist or atheist, a believer or not – you’ll never know, so why force others to apply to your standard? Why judge them if no one is getting hurt? We are beyond the holier-than-thou mind-set.
To this, someone might ask about the concept of morality. Where do we draw the line of good and evil if there may not be an objective truth? But just because it doesn’t apply to the existence doesn’t mean that we don’t have enough awareness to comprehend that actions have consequences. Some things can be considered evil by our earthly, human standard. That’s what unifies us as a society.
People with the nihilistic approach may tell you that your existence is an excruciating wait for your own perish. That it’s all pointless, without a meaning. I don’t think that’s the case, despite the fact that we may never know what life truly means. Who said that the meaning of life had to be finding out the answer?
The meaning of life is whatever you want it to be. What is right to you. Your path is not bound by fate. Far too many people hold their true selves back for the sake of others. They tell them that their path won’t bring them enough. Be it importance in society or culture, or worse – money. But who said it has to? Who said it should? The only life you should ever worry about is your own – that’s not to say others don’t matter. But when it comes to the meaning of life, it’s left up to interpretation. What is yours? 1.
Všetky súťažné práce splnili kritériá hodnotenia, a preto si všetky dievčatá zaslúžia knižnú odmenu.
